************************* PUGET SOUND ************************** 1) "It would be useful for future studies to obtain long hydrographic sections that would allow for comparisons of offshore oceanic conditions with water properties and circulation in Puget Sound." From: UNDERGRADUATE OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCH: A LONGITUDINAL TRANSECT OF PUGET SOUND MAY 2002 AND HISTORICAL COMPARISON WYNNAE M. OSENGA CYNTHIA TOMKINS CHERYL GREENGROVE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON - TACOMA 2002 Their transects suggest nutrient source is within the Main Basin, not the open ocean via the Straits. So what is the nutrient source and in what direction are the fluxes? Why don't they show up in the Straits? Are nutrients entirely recycled within the Main Basin? Is the Main Basin therefore filling up with sediment and organic material? What is net flux from humans? Are the main human sources sewage outfalls, overflows, and agricultural inputs, or is contaminated groundwater flow (septic tanks?) significant? Are these significant relative to the riverine fluxes? Would it be good for the sound to harvest biomass in order to reduce the nutrient concentrations? What is the flux of biomass (fish, etc) out of the Sound at present? 2) Where, if anywhere, might sedimentary records from before the last glaciation exist in Puget Sound? What information about past climate and Northwest nature could be gleaned from such deposits? Do similar deep pockets exist in Hood Canal where anoxia is currently a growing concern? 3) **************************
