Comments:Hi Susan, I just got off the phone with the folks at Great Pacific Adventures. It seems that two of their drivers have seen L-12 (Alexis) with a 6-12 inch gash on her right side just below her saddle patch. The gash is healing. I had a private boater report that he saw a female orca on 8/5 with a 10 in gash on her left side just below her saddle patch. The gash appeared fresh. Just passing this info along to see if we have the same whale both times. Any one else got some info? Thanks Rowann

Reported by: Sharyn Mellors
Location: Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island
Species: Orca
Pod: Transient
Members: 3 - 4 orcas
Direction: south
Comments:Dear Susan, I am new at this so I was unable to count them or tell you what pod. But there are what appear to be orcas in admirals cove about a third of the way between ledgewood beach and the Point Wilson light house (4:20 pm). There seemed to be at least 3 or 4. I saw the last one at 5:05pm. The last time I saw any they were heading south. I have trees that keep me from seeing much in that direction. They seemed to stay in the same general area for most of the time I was watching. They were going in all directions. Maybe they were playing or perhaps eating but they were not traveling. I saw black fins going up and then down in the water in an arc. There seemed to be a couple of different sizes and I was able to count 3 or 4 fins that didn't seem to be attached to each other. I was using a telescope so I had a limited field of view at any one time. I hope that this information helps. Sharyn Mellors Ledgewood beach

Comments:Susan, yesterday --saturday-- I was on the 10:45 sailing from Keystone to PT and we saw a lone whale headed north. It was large with a small dorsal fin, so I assume its either a minke or humpback. David Freed

Comments:We had a sighting of orcas off Lummi again Friday night, 8/3 about 9:00pm , but this time , going NORTH, (unusual this time of year i think) - i saw them, very close to Orcas Island northeast side, but they were so far off, i can't even begin to say who it was....just good to see them after 6 days absence! the salmon are thick here, so hopefully they're back for a while! Comments:Finally, at 11:35am today (August 3), a group of more than 30 Orca going north passed close by Mouat Point in Swanson Channel on North Pender Island. Our hydrophone recorded a few vocalizations but the entire group were quite quiet and were likely foraging for food. Over half the group were within 15 yards of the shore line and provided a spectacular show of nature at its best from our high bank summer home. Alan Lowe

Comments:Hi Susan Day 5 with no Orcas for me. Minkes on Hein Bank in the morning very little action. The afternoon was wonderful, lunging whales, huge flocks of birds had 4 whales on the surface at one time, there were more than 6 whales. Ron Bates MMRG
