Introduction

Beam Reach is a sustainability science school focused on the marine environment. We believe that combining ocean exploration, student inquiry, and a vessel demonstrating clean technologies is the best way to foster personal growth, teach the scientific process, and promote a sustainability ethic.

The core Beam Reach offering is a full-term (10 week) field science program for undergraduates and recent graduates. It is appropriate for science and non-science majors alike, and is approved for academic credit through the University of Washington. During the first half of the program students collaborate with scientists, formulate individual research projects, and prepare for sea. Then they board a sailing research vessel and explore the Pacific Ocean under renewable power.

Inspiration: "A human being is part of a whole, called by us the 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. We experience our self, our thought and feelings, as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of our consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
